Dualtone Technology

DualTone is a system perfected by RIO that marks the sweet spot of a fly line by providing an obvious color change in the line. The design of every fly line taper, its most likely application and each individual line size is carefully taken into account, and the location of the color change is unique to each fly line.
Every line model and size is tested on a selection of fly rods to find the ideal place where the rod loads, and the color change starts at that point.
With the DualTone system it is easy to see how much line to strip in, where to pick up a cast, how much line can be held in the air when false casting, and when to make the final cast.

Last fall I set out on a mission to get into some ESOX on the fly rod. First I needed to get some new line but what type? Through experience fishing windy days in New Mexico I knew I wanted something for launching big flies a long distance with as little double hauling as possible. A short Headline with a lot of weight allows the angler to pick up 20' of line and in one motion launch 80' of line directly into the wind. It also comes in handy when fishing from the bank and areas with limited room for a back cast. With these things in mind I order some RIO Outbound Short Coldwater Flyline WF8F/I

My first time using the line was on the Rio Grande River fishing for northern pike with bunny streamers 5-8" long. There are tons of rocks, trees, and brush, to avoid when positioning yourself for a cast. This line seems like it was built specifically for fishing the Rio Grande Gorge. The Outbound Short has a very fast taper to the headline which loads the rod quick and allows you to launch big flies long distances in tight quarters. I was able to pick up 20 feet of line and in one motion send 80 feet of line screaming towards my target with ease all day long!

I managed to catch 2 Pike on the river in a short time and look forward to getting back up there. Sorry we didn't get any photos from the trip but I did get the action on video. See the video of RIO's Outbound Short in action on the Rio Grand River.

The next test came while fishing Bluewater lake for Tiger Muskies from the boat. What I was paying most attention to was the sink rate of the line in still water. As expected it sunk much faster than in the river due to the lack of resistance the line receives when fishing flowing water; plus I was able to leave all the headline on the water for a longer period of time which maximized it's sink rate.

I really like how the head line is clear making for stealthy presentation when fishing clear still water. I also found it useful watching the section of line where the clear line transitioned to white line as a strike and retrieval rate indicator. This is also a good way to know exactly how much line you have left to retrieve. Both Pike and Tiger Muskies are known to follow flies all the way to your feet before the viciously attacking. Knowing how close I was to the end of my retrieve made it easy for me to track my fly and any potential takes near the boat.

I think the line performed great in still water considering I was targeting fish sitting in 6-8 feet of water. RIO Products makes Fly Lines for any situation or species an angler pursues.
